How to Add Live Chat to Shopify Without Editing Theme Code
Skip theme.liquid paste jobs. Use a Shopify Theme App Embed to add an AI live chat bubble in a few clicks — safer for Online Store 2.0 themes.
Many Shopify tutorials still say: "Edit `theme.liquid` and paste this script before `</head>`."
That works — until a theme update wipes your edits, a developer removes "mystery scripts," or App Store review asks why you are injecting code by hand.
There is a cleaner path: Theme App Embeds.
Why App embeds beat pasting into theme.liquid
- No manual Liquid edits
- Survives most theme switches (you re-enable the embed once)
- Merchants can turn chat on/off without a developer
- Aligns with how Shopify wants apps to modify the Online Store
If you only need a storefront chat bubble, prefer an App embed over ScriptTag or hard-coded snippets.
Step-by-step (Rivet Chat)
### 1. Install the app
Install Rivet Chat from the Shopify App Store (or open it if already installed). Complete Shopify Billing if prompted — that unlocks your Rivet inbox for the shop.
### 2. Confirm Setup shows a Tenant ID
In the app, open Setup. You should see a Tenant ID for this shop. Rivet creates the inbox automatically — you do not need a separate rivet-chat.com signup for Shopify merchants.
### 3. Enable the App embed
Click Open theme editor from Setup, or go manually:
Online Store → Themes → Customize → App embeds → Rivet Chat → ON → Save
### 4. Test on the storefront
Open your live store (not only the editor preview). Click the bubble and ask a product question, for example:
- "What products do you have?"
- "Is the blue hoodie in stock?"
Rivet answers from your connected catalog / inventory data — not a frozen FAQ dump.
What if your theme is vintage?
Online Store 2.0 themes support App embeds. Very old themes may need the classic snippet method on Integrations → Shopify. If Customize has no App embeds section, talk to your theme author about upgrading.
Optional: brand the widget
In the Rivet Dashboard (opened from the Shopify app), set greeting, colors, and quick replies under Appearance. Changes apply without reinstalling the app.
Common mistakes
- Enabling the embed on a draft theme instead of the live one
- Forgetting to click Save in the theme editor
- Testing with an ad blocker that strips chat scripts
